Welcome

Café Cor-rupt was a neighbourhood bar on Ceintuurbaan in Amsterdam, in a suburb known as De Pijp, just outside the typical tourist trail.

Established in 1981 by a young (and idealistic) Dutch couple, Cor and Jet, this unassuming Grolsch café became a meeting point for a most unlikely and diverse bunch of characters of all nationalities and creeds, from all walks of life.

For a period of nine or so years, this bar and its people played a central role in the lives of many and it now feels fitting that, on the 40th anniversary of its opening, an online scrapbook of memories (possibly a bit faded) be gathered from stories and anecdotes to offer an answer to the question:

“If you were in Amsterdam and the Café Cor-rupt in the eighties, how would you describe the atmosphere to people nowadays who were not there (and may misinterpret the joke in the name)?”

To this end, Jet (one of the original owners) and Paul (one of the original customers) would love to hear from you if you were there. Just give us your email address on our contact form and we will get in touch directly.

Many who were there are no longer with us but can still be remembered fondly for their part in our lives and our part in theirs, at a place called Cor-rupt that seemed to be anything but!

Paul
