Fochteloo

In ’87, Cor and I got into a bit of hassle with taxes. Completely unjustified we thought, but what can one do…. plus, in ‘86 we had the 5th anniversary of Cor-rupt and our first real vacation. So the ‘tip jar’ was quite empty and we thought we would have to postpone our weekend away with Cor-rupt for a while.

And then there was Tjeerd, an angel from heaven. His father had a café in Fochteloo with big lawns  next to it. We were able to set up tents and for those who liked a bit more comfort there was a little hotel nearby. And so, we had our budget-weekend.

In my memory, it was one of our best outings ever. The surroundings were beautiful, we walked, cycled, rested, had a BBQ and played football against a local team assembled for the occasion.

The performance was not great, (our defense ran away if the opponent got too close and our goalkeeper walked on clogs which didn’t boost his acceleration speed. Luckily we had a flashy forward line which limited the damage) but what a pleasure!

Many slept in tents, some I think in the attic and the rest in the hotel. The next day we had a beautiful bike ride where I asked Tjeerd quite a stupid question. “And what are these very special and nice plants which grow here”?  Those are potatoes , Jet, he said. Well now, you can’t know everything!
